On rack and pinion steering systems, outer tie rods are directly connected to an inner tie rod end. On steering box type systems, outer tie rod ends are connected to both the inner and outer pivot points of a linkage system, typically using adjusting sleeves. An outer tie rod is connected to an inner tie rod by an adjusting thread. This makes it possible to adjust the vehicle alignment to factory specifications and reduce tire wear.
